When I see the reddish glow of the fruit in these paintings, there is a certain conflict. The color suggests a kind of magical encounter with the natural world, yet it also represents a kind of anxiety and dissociation of the psyche in relation to nature. This kind of distance between human beings and nature is one of the major tragedies that the artist is trying to tell us. His paintings reveal a bowl of fruit, something innocent. But as we look again, one might see the fruit under a different light. Is it real fruit? Or just an image of fruit? A temptation or a reality? What does it mean to live in a world of simulation?
